Arrive in Halifax

Arrive at the Halifax Airport and pick up your car from a local car rental agency. Halifax offers that rare blend of historic charm and bustling modernity. Soak in the sights and sounds as you make your way to your hotel downtown. Check-in and relax. You have a long and exciting day tomorrow.

Halifax – Bridgewater

Spend your morning at leisure. Halifax is located in one of the largest natural harbours of the world and offers beautiful promenades. In the afternoon, begin the first leg of your journey with a drive along the Lighthouse Route to the fishing community of Peggy’s Cove. This pretty fishing village is surrounded by bare granite with trails leading to its famed octagonal lighthouse. Enjoy the striking views and don’t forget to take a picture with this iconic red and white structure as your backdrop. Continue along the coast and stop in the port of Lunenburg for a visit to the renowned Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic. Get yourself a short dose of fascinating history. (Overnight in Bridgewater.)

Bridgewater to Charlottetown

Today, after breakfast you head to Charlottetown in the province of Prince Edward Island. Yes, it is exactly as elegant as it sounds. But before you get there, you’re in for a little treat. Today is the day you drive across the longest, continuous multi-span bridge in the world. Spread over 8 miles of ice-cold water, the Confederation Bridge is a veritable marvel of engineering. See how long it takes you to cross it and compare notes with other road trip enthusiasts! When you get to Charlottetown, check in to your hotel and enjoy some well-deserved downtime.

Charlottetown to Baddeck

After breakfast this morning head out to explore the graceful Victorian homes and squares of Charlottetown. Despite being modern, the city still manages to evoke the feeling of a colonial seaport with beautifully quaint pockets like Great George Street and Old Charlotte Town. Spend the morning soaking in its old-world charm. In the afternoon, check-out of your hotel and drive past the Orwell Corner Historic Site to board the ferry across the Northumberland Strait to Nova Scotia. As you disembark and begin your drive to the delightful resort community of Baddeck, enjoy the tranquil views of highland scenery dotted with tiny picture-perfect villages along the way. The highlight at Baddeck though is the fascinating museum dedicated to Alexander Graham Bell, the man we must thank for our beloved telephones. (Overnight at the hotel in Baddeck.)

Baddeck

After breakfast today, set upon the spectacularly scenic Cabot Trail, driving through the highlands of northern Cape Breton. The trail runs past glittering lochs and gloriously green glens settled by Scottish Highlanders and along picturesque coastlines, which the Acadians call home. You’ll meander through the rugged Cape Breton Highlands National Park, enjoying stunning views of sea-swept headlands, steep cliffs and tranquil beaches. Drink-in your fill of the beautiful vistas, then return to Baddeck satiated, driving through the lush Margaree Valley. (Overnight at the hotel in Baddeck.)

Baddeck to Halifax

Check-out after breakfast today and proceed to Halifax. On the way visit the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site and step right into the 17th century. Roam the streets, chat with authentically costumed guides and witness a slice of life as it was lived more than 300 years ago. Later, proceed along the shore of the Bras d’Or Lake to the mainland and back to Halifax for one last night in the Maritimes. (Overnight at the hotel in Halifax.)

Depart Halifax

Post breakfast, check out and head to the Halifax Airport, dropping off the car at the car rental agency along the way. The end of a road trip is often bittersweet. You know you’ll miss the open road with its endless possibilities, as soon as you step out of the car. But take heart, you’ve got a trunkful of memories to tide you over, until you can get behind the wheel again!
