The Wild Side - Adventure
Upon arrival at the Rovaniemi airport, you head to the SnowCastle area in Kemi, a sleepy town on Bothnian Bay. Check in to your resort and rest-up. Tomorrow is when the adventure begins. Overnight at SnowCastle Resort in Kemi.
After breakfast today, you drive a snowmobile across a frozen Bothnian sea to reach the magical Arctic Adventureland. The journey is electrifying. Especially in the winter, when the world around is submerged in complete darkeness. Enjoy the almost dreamlike stillness of the Arctic forest around you. And when you’re done looking around, look up – this is the perfect spot to catch a glimpse of the breathtaking northern lights. Later, head to the Ajos Harbour to experience the astonishing Icebreaker Sampo Cruise. Being onboard the majestic and massive Arctic Icebreaker as it crushes the thick ice of the Gulf of Bothnia is an extreme experience in its own right. The thundering sound of more than 3500 tons of steel breaking through thick ice can leave even the most seasoned seafarer awestruck. The Sampo is like a living museum, having retained its original form from the 1960’s as closely as possible. Soak in a bit of history and then do the unthinkable - jump in for a swim in the frozen sea. Swimming between blocks of ice does sound chilling (pun intended), but with a waterproof suit, it is actually safe. Do it once, because after all an adventure in the Arctic is about extremes. In the evening visit the Arkadia reindeer farm. This is the most authentic way to interact with the gorgeous creatures. Meet a reindeer herder, learn about traditional reindeer husbandry and try your hand at reindeer lasso. Later, enjoy a reindeer ride. At a brisk pace, through the hushed and untouched forest, this is a thrilling experience. Warm up with coffee brewed over an open fire. Dinner at IceRestaurant . Overnight at resort in Kemi.
After breakfast this morning, leave Kemi and head to Ranua - The Arctic Cloudberry Village. Surrounded by forests and mires and dotted with more than 500 lakes, Ranua is known for the golden, vitamin-rich berries found in abundance in the region, as well for its Wildlife Park. The Ranua Wildlife Park boasts of the only polar bears in all of Finland. Take a guided tour of the park for a chance to spot more than 50 species of Arctic animals including the white-tailed deer, the mountain wolf and the muskox. Later go on a Siberian Husky Safari by Wild Nordic . Yes, it is exactly as thrilling as it sounds. Drive your own team of Siberian huskies through the beautiful wintry forest and along the frozen River Raudanjoki and while you’re at it, do a bit of Aurora hunting. The Aurora Borealis or the spellbinding Northern Lights are visible for upto 200 nights in a year in Finnish Lapland. In Rovaniemi, they can be witnessed in and around the city from mid-August until early April. Overnight at hotel/resort in Ranua.
Post breakfast head to the Sirmakko Reindeer Farm at the edge of the beautiful lake Perunkajarvi. You can trust your hosts Hanna and Sami, sixth-generation reindeer herders and reindeer farm owners to take good care of you. Here on the farm you can ride a a reindeer sleigh, feed the reindeers and experience a slice of genuine reindeer farm life. Enjoy an à la carte dinner in the atmospheric Kota restaurant. Overnight at lodge in Ranua.
After a sumptious breakfast at your hotel, head to one of the most enchanting attractions in Lapland – the Santa Claus Village. Situated in the Arctic Circle, at the special location of 66° 33′ 39″, where the sun can stay continuously below or above the horizon for 24 hours, this is the official residence of goodwill ambassador Mr. Santa Claus. Meet Santa Claus in his office, say hello to his reindeers and before you say bye, promise him, you’ll be extra good this year. Later, head to the Rovaniemi Airport to board your flight to Helsinki. Upon arrival at the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport head into the city. Helsinki is celebrating the year of art, architecture and culture, which makes it an exceptionally fabulous time to be visiting. Gawk at the magnificent architecture, take in the sublime blend of design and functionality that marks every aspect of Finnish life and enjoy a meal at one of Helsinki’s many exciting restaurants. The culinary and drinking scene in Helsinki is creative, quirky and worldclass. (Overnight at hotel in Helsinki.)
After breakfast meet your local guide and begin your day with a visit to Oodi, Helsinki’s awe-inspiring new Central Library. Visualized as a house of reading as well as a venue for events and diverse urban experiences, Oodi blends design and technology, and uses book-sorting robots and on-line access to offer readers more than 3.4 million books. After Oodi, it is time to visit Amos Rex - a new type of museum, a space dedicated to art, that is easy to reach and a ‘cool’ place to hang out; a protean space that can readily take on various forms, open to experimentation and new forms of collaboration. Enjoy lunch at leisure before returning to the hotel. Overnight at hotel in Helsinki.
After breakfast today, spend the day at leisure. Later in the evening transfer to the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport for your flight back home.
